Answers toVasco da Gama questions:

Question: How can I fit my own maps into Vasco da Gama 5 - Vasco da Gama 8? Is it possible to use flat maps?

Answer: Your own maps will always be laid on the base map (world map), so it is important to fit your own maps on the world map. If the base map would not be displayed, then you would always have the black squares at the marginal areas which is certainly not what is wanted. Find out more about fitting maps into Vasco da Gama 5 with this short training video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjzQPHL7BlA

If you would like to make a flat map animation like in older versions of Vasco da Gama, then this trick helps:

Make the map/photo to be imported very small (by dragging when adjusting within the Vasco da Gama) and place it anywhere on the globe, ideally near the equator! This means that the curvature of the earth is almost completely gone. Then zoom in close to your small map with the camera. Now you can create your travel route with the advantages of the current version of Vasco da Gama without the "curvature problem" and without the globe.

If you would prefer to see a uniform colour instead of the map of the world at the edge regions (by zooming outside of your map), please take a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_qA_J9CDEs&list=UUjTdZXYDLIHrNRl7GXZoILA&index=3&feature=plcp

Note: Since version Vasco da Gama 9, you can choose whether you work with the 3-dimensional globe or if you would like to create your animation on a flat map.

Question: Vasco da Gama 5-Vasco da Gama 8: In the editor, I can see the whole travel route, when I look at the preview then I can only see part of the travel route, what can I do?

Answer: Once you have created your travel route, go into camera mode (upper left, click left on the "camera"). Here you can set the camera zoom for each stopping point. Using the following buttons, you can switch between stopping points:

Position 1: at starting point
End: at end point
Page up: to previous point
page down: to next point
(see also keyboard shortcuts in the manual)

If you have set the camera work on "manual" in the global settings, then you can also change camera position.

Note: Since version Vasco da Gama 9, automatic mode ensures that the entire route 1 animation is automatically recorded correctly. The distance for the route for the entire camera movement can also be adjusted using zoom correction.

Question: How do I get the best quality for the video I want to export?

Answers (version-specific):

Vasco da Gama 6 and 7: To get the best quality, you must first select the video template "HDTV 1080/50i" in the project settings and set the output image type as "full screen (progressive scan)".

From Vasco da Gama 8: In the project settings (tab "Project"), select the video template HDTV 1080/25p; all other settings can then be applied.

All Vasco da Gama versions: When you want to save the video, it is best to select AVI (DirectShow) as the output video format, "deinterlace" can stay active as the default.

When you save the video it is best use the codec "uncompressed (full frame)". The result is a very large, but high-quality video, which you can use for further editing in a video editing programme. At the end of the work process, compress your work results for the target medium, such as DVD or Blu-ray for example. The video will then run smoothly and in optimal quality.

Question: How do I choose a HD format under Vasco da Gama 5 HDPro?

Answer: In order to use the HD formats, you must first set the video output format to "AVI (DirectShow)" in the main settings. Then, you can use the HD video patterns in the project settings, best in "HDTV 1080/50i".

Question: How do I get a map created with Vasco StreetMaps into Vasco da Gama?

Answer: In order to be able to use maps from Vasco StreetMaps in Vasco da Gama, you must first render them as "full frame" (click top left tab). Then you will find another button directly below the map on the left, with which you can save the map as an image. This can also be imported into Vasco da Gama.

Question: Is there a Mac version of Vasco da Gama and can Vasco da Gama run on a Mac?

Answer: We are currently using an iMac and work with the help of Parallels with Vasco da Gama. For this to work however, you need quite a lot of space for Parallels and an actual graphics card. It is therefore recommended to install "Bootcamp" with Windows and to then start Vasco da Gama from there.

There is not yet a native Mac version of Vasco da Gama.

Question: Where can I find the 38-minute training course for Vasco da Gama 4?

Answer:You can download the short training course for Vasco da Gama 4 right here:

Problems with Vasco da Gama:

General technical issues:

For general problems with Vasco da Gama such as programme crashes and display issues, the cause in most cases is the graphics card or the installed video driver.

You should therefore DIRECTLY go to the website of the video card manufacturer, download the latest driver for your graphics card and operating system there, and install and then check after you reboot the system whether the problems with Vasco da Gama have been resolved.

Please also take note of the system requirements for Vasco da Gama. Here are the current requirements for Vasco da Gama 8 (for older versions you can find this information on the product package):

3D Graphics card with the following minimum requirements:
* 512 MB RAM or more
* Supports OpenGL 3.3 or higher
* Supports ShaderModel 3.0 or higher
* Supports 8 Texture mapping units or higher
Intel HD, Laptop, Notebooks, Netbooks or Onboard graphic chips with these minimum requirements can work, but they are not officially supported

Problems with Vasco da Gama 5 - Vasco da Gama 9:

The base map does not appear on the desktop after start up, instead only a white circle (show the solution)
The colours of the objects cannot be changed (show the solution)
The finished video is all black (show the solution)
Vasco da Gama does not run with my Notebook or Onboard graphics card (show the solution)
I only have Intel graphics chips in my computer, why isn't Vasco da Gama working? (show the solution)
Vasco da Gama crashes just after the start (show the solution)
When attempting to install Vasco da Gama on Windows (7 or higher) with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 for example, the following error message appears: "error, minimal display resolution is 1024 x 768. The program is ended." (show the solution)
After installation, Vasco da Gama starts only in demo mode. What can I do? (show the solution)
If you start Vasco da Gama (Version 5 - Version 8) on a Mac running Parallels, then the scroll wheels do not operate properly and the values always jump to the maximum. What can you do about it? (show the solution)
The preview images for objects are no longer visible ("load image" message instead of preview image). What should you do? (show the solution)
Vasco da Gama (from Version 7 on) does not display the purchased base maps (EarthMaps) that were available in an older version of Vasco da Gama. What can I do? (To the solution)
In Vasco da Gama 8 and 9, the route lines are not visible. Why is that? (show the solution)

Problem solutions for Vasco da Gama 5 - Vasco da Gama 9:

Problem: The base map does not appear on the desktop after start up, instead only a white circle

Solution: There are probably three possible causes:

Cause 1: Either there is a rights issue on your computer. Please click the right mouse button on the Vasco da Gama programme and run it as administrator by selecting "Run as administrator".

Cause 2: Or it could also be a problem with the graphics card. Please install the latest video card drivers for your graphics card from the graphics card manufacturer (e.g. ATI or NVIDIA).

Cause 3: If an older version of Vasco da Gama has previously been uninstalled manually, then map data may have been deleted. In this case, you should completely uninstall Vasco da Gama and then reinstall it.

Problem: The colours of the objects cannot be changed

Solution for Vascco da Gama 5: Please uninstall completely Vasco da Gama and install the latest version of Vasco da Gama. Use your serial number:

Version Vasco da Gama 5 HD Professional:
www.motionstudios.de/files/Install_VdG5HDProfessional.exe (ca. 431MB)

Version Vasco da Gama 5 HD Professional Upgrade:
www.motionstudios.de/files/Install_VdG5HDProUpg.exe (ca. 431MB)

Version Vasco da Gama 5 Advanced and 5 Advanced Upgrade:
www.motionstudios.de/files/Install_VdG5Advanced.exe (ca. 431MB)

Solution for Vasco da Gama 7: The colour problem sounds like a very old problem with Vasco da Gama 5 that you have seemingly transferred to later versions. Please uninstall Vasco da Gama 7 and reinstall it. Important: During installation you will be asked for paths 2 times.

You will have to change the second path input (do not accept the default, instead it is best to select a different partition as "C:"), and then the problem should be resolved.

Problem: The finished video is all black

Solution:If you get only a black video when creating a video, then you are probably using a NVIDIA graphics card with a Windows XP System. Unfortunately there is a fault in the graphics driver (only with Windows XP!). To fix the problem, set your graphics card to "output", as indicated in the attached picture, then it should work.

Grafikkarteneinstellung NVIDIA

Problem: Vasco da Gama does not run with my Notebook or Onboard graphics card

Solution: Onboard and Notebook graphics cards do not contain all the functions that Vasco da Gama 5 needs, this can therefore lead the program to crash. In our system requirements, we explicitly point out that Notebook or Onboard graphics cards are not officially supported, since these are usually only "stripped-down" versions.

Problem: I only have Intel graphics chips in my computer, why isn't Vasco da Gama working?

Solution: Vasco da Gama will not function correctly with Intel graphics chips because they do not provide the necessary functionality for Vasco da Gama (see system requirements). For this reason, many manufacturers install an additional "correct graphics card" from NVIDIA or ATI so that graphics intensive programmes also work. In your case, only upgrading the computer or installing the programme on a computer with a more powerful graphics card will help.

Problem: Vasco da Gama crashes just after the start

Solutions:

Possible cause 1: There seems to be a problem with the graphics card. Please install the latest graphics driver for your graphics card manufacturer.

Possible cause 2: Some newer (usually laptops) computers have 2 graphics cards built in, Intel graphics chips and a "real" graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI, for example. If you also have such a computer, please explicitly assign Vasco da Gama with the powerful graphics card by clicking the right mouse button on the programme icon Vasco da Gama and assign the graphics card (ATI or NVIDIA). With some cards, you have to go directly to the graphics card settings to assign the graphics card to the programmes.

If you have installed 2 graphics cards, but cannot assign these cards to the programmes, there are 2 possible reasons: The graphics card drivers for the powerful graphics card is not current; in this case go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver there, or the BIOS of your computer needs to be updated. Please contact the manufacturer of your computer directly.

Problem: When attempting to install Vasco da Gama on Windows (from Win 7) with a screen resolution of, for example, 1920 x 1080, the following error message appears: "Error, minimum display resolution is 1024 x 768. The programme will be terminated."

Solution: You are using a zoom function or other function of Windows 7 or Windows 8 to display larger fonts, etc., which means your screen no longer has the necessary 1024x768 pixels internally (even if your screen has 1920x1080 pixels, for example). Turn this feature off in Windows and then you should no longer receive this error message.

Problem: After installation, Vasco da Gama starts only in demo mode. What can I do?

Solution: The simplest way is to do as follows:

  • First uninstall Vasco da Gama from your computer
  • Re-install Vasco da Gama and make sure to enter your serial number during the installation (starting with VDG -...)

Problem: If you start Vasco da Gama (Version 5 - Version 8) on a Mac running Parallels, then the scroll wheels do not operate properly and the values always jump to the maximum. What can you do about it?

Solution: The problem with the knobs is a small Mac/Parallels problem with the query of the mouse pointer, which you can reduce with a little trick:

Go into Windows Control Panel. Then click the mouse settings (found under "Hardware and Sound ->" "Devices and Printers" -> "Mouse" in Windows 7), where you will find the button "Turn on click snap". Activate it. If you then go to a scroll wheel in Vasco da Gama, simply click on it, move the mouse to the right or left until you like the value, and then click again to lock the value.

Note: Since version Vasco da Gama 9, there is a special mouse mode (click mouse wheel click) that addresses this problem with this type of control.

Problem: The preview images for objects are no longer visible ("load image" message instead of preview image). What should you do?

Solution: You must go to one of these two directories:

In older Vasco da Gama versions (up to Vasco da Gama 7):
C:\User\Your username\AppData\Roaming\MotionStudios\MotionStudiosData\Vasco da Gama\3dpool\objects

In newer installations you will find the appropriate directory on the hard drive here:
C:\ProgramData\MotionStudios\MotionStudiosData\Vasco da Gama\3dpool\objects\

There you must manually copy the appropriate object folders (objects) and "sys" and "info" folders from the installation DVD into it. You will then see the preview images again.

Problem: Vasco da Gama (from Version 7 on) does not display the purchased base maps (EarthMaps) that were available in an older version of Vasco da Gama. What can I do? (To the solution)

Solution: Just go to the following directory:

C:\User\yourUsername\AppData\Roaming\MotionStudios\EarthMaps\BaseMaps

And copy all ".vem" files into this directory:

C:\ProgramData\MotionStudios\EarthMaps\BaseMaps\EarthMaps\BaseMaps

After that, the current version of Vasca da Gama (from Version 7 on) should find the maps again.

Problem: In Vasco da Gama 8 and 9, the route lines are not visible. Why is that?

Solution: You are probably using an Intel HD graphics card / chip. This card does not support all features that are necessary for operating Vasco da Gama (see system requirements). In this case, you should install a more powerful graphics card, or if it is already in the computer, activate it for operating Vasco da Gama.

If a graphics card compatible with the system requirements is already activated and the route lines are not visible, then you must go DIRECTLY to the graphics card manufacturer's website and download the current graphics card driver for your map and install it. The problem should then be resolved.
